2022 5K FUN RUN
Our 12th Fun Run will be in Memory of
Doug Smerkar for his dedication to our community
and the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Proceeds from the Heroes Among Us 2022 5K will be donated to the WTVF Department.
The MAYFEST Community Association was honored to have the 2022 HEROES AMONG US 5K in memory of Doug Smerkar. Our theme is perfect for this well-known and respected individual in the community of Fryburg. Doug’s passion for the past 46 years was the Washington Township Fire Department, Clarion County. He was active in many capacities, holding the Fire Chief position in the past and currently serving as Engineer. As a way of life, he always responded willingly and was disappointed recently when he was unable to physically help, due to his illness. Although his health kept him from responding to calls, his heart continued to be with each firefighter as they answered calls, attended work nights or fundraising events.
Doug also served on the board of the Shippenville/Elk Ambulance Service. Working in the past for CP Leach Insurance and most recently for Glatfelter Insurance Group specializing in insurance for fire departments. Doug profession even protected his fellow firefighters.
Doug loved and was proud of his family. He and his wife, Julie, raised their daughter, Darla and two sons, Shane and Mathias in their hometown of Fryburg. His passion for helping others has been passed on to his family, as they are all involved serving the community in different capacities. He was especially proud of his two grandchildren Aiden and Sara.
Join us in showing our appreciation to his family by donating to The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department and/or participating in our 5K Fun Run/Walk on Friday, May 27, 2022.
Please send donations to MAYFEST 5K, PO box 116, Fryburg, PA 16326. Please earmark donations to the WTVFD.

MEDAL AND RACE SPONSOR
The weather held out for our event honoring Doug. His wife Julie and grandson and furry friends led the racers in Doug's Razor. His family as well as fellow workers, fire fighters and friends were in attendance for the dedication of the bench that was places at the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department in Fryburg, a gift from CP Leach, VFIS and the WTVFD. As the dedication was about to begin the unit was called to a neighboring fire and was quickly sent back while a rainbow was seen overhead. We had over 110 cross the finish line, and many more in attendance.
Our sincere thanks to our Sponsors and Volunteers who make the event possible. A donation will be given to the WTVFD in Doug's memory from the profits of this event.
